General FAQ’s about Hawk Valley Garden
How did Hawk Valley Garden begin?
My grandparents used to own the acreage where they ran Lorenz Antiques for 37 years. Along with that my grandma used to sell squash, Indian corn, popcorn each fall.my cousins and myself helped her wait on customers. In 2001 we took over their large garden growing vegetables and 50 hills of pumpkins. We tried to sell the vegetables but the pumpkins were the hot seller. In 2002 we decided to plant the whole garden in pumpkins, squash and gourds and opened Hawk Valley Garden Pumpkin Stand in the fall.
How many acres is your farm?
Hawk Valley Garden consists of our garden which is 2 acres. We grow almost 3000 hills of pumpkins every year at home. My dad has five acres at his home on Lost Island Lake. He grows around 5000 hills of pumpkins every year.
How many people do we hire?
None. We are family business. My husband and I own and operate Hawk Valley Garden. Our daughter, Liz, is our manager and her husband Chris helps pick pumpkins each fall. Our son, Zach, just graduated from Iowa State, comes home and will help when needed. My dad, Darrell, grows all our big jack’s for us. On a daily basis there is just three of us doing all the work. Also we all work normal 40 hour a week jobs so come every fall we take off couple weeks from work and open up the pumpkin stand.
How does our garden grow?
We start planting pumpkins seeds in early May when ground temperature stays above 60 degrees. Besides compost we supplement our garden with chicken manure, fish emulsion and fertilize every 3 weeks throughout the summer. Pumpkins need good soil and lots of nutrients to produce.
Where do we get our seeds?
Everywhere. Harris Seeds, Holmes Seeds, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, Seed Exchange, Rupp Seeds, Seeger Seeds, Pinetree seeds, Johnny Seeds, Outstanding Seeds, Walmart, Bomgaars, Del’s Garden Center, online and even Ebay. I am constantly looking for new varieties or old heirloom varieties.
